Android. Call it silly, call it bizarre. But Android reminds me of that new kid in town, Rocky Balboa, having defeated, unexpectedly, the undisputed Apollo 'The Master of Disaster' Creed in Rocky, with pride. Without a doubt, Android has grown. More than what you and me can think it has. The critics shut their mouths. Thousands of users switched, and believe me, for better. And they, my friends, were exhilarated. Android bested in nearly all aspects with an army of smartphones that it boasts upon. Shall commend this, but before that, let me just talk about a smartphone that took the globe by storm. Agreed! Calling iPhone just a phone is such a disgrace. Those who're loyal to Apple would never agree to what I am going to abet in this write-up. But whether or not you agree, there does exist a contender that has outplayed the iPhone in a very short time. Today, it's not Apple versus Android. It's Apple versus all others. It's about iOS versus everything else. About the iPhone versus a slew of beautiful smartphones that are Android-based. Those who're tongue-tied over what to buy - iPhone or Android, need to get acquainted with some of the biggest advantages of Android over iPhone, the major five being discussed below. On a personal note, I am an Apple devotee, and would've never wanted to carry out this comparison. However, believe me when I say that, if performance is taken into consideration, Android is way better. I'm sorry, Apple.
Multitasking
Yes. The iPhone can do a lot. But not at once. On the other hand, Android lets you swipe between programs. What's more, while Apple iPhone allows you to open only seven applications simultaneously, Android phones allow you to have as many applications as you want open, at any point of time. For iPhone users, this has come up to be a little restrictive. While on the iPhone, all you can do is send mails, listen to music, and take calls at once, on Android you can listen to music, receive notifications, record GPS data, all without keeping the application open. That perhaps, sums up as the biggest advantage of Android over iPhone.
Hardware You Like
The iPhone is beautiful. Undoubtedly! But when you have to compare it with an army of Android based smartphones, it loses its worth. Why? Let me explain. iPhone comes in black, and that's all. We're still waiting for the white one. Moreover, with the iPhone, one has to do with just 256 MB of RAM and 600MHz processor, and the usual 320x480 pixel display in the 3.5 inch screen. That's all. On the other hand, the developers of Android knew it would turn out to be a limitation for users, and hence they offered an open platform for Android, where users have the freedom to pair their device with any hardware they like. For example, the Motorola Droid has a physical keypad, and the Nexus One has 512 MB of RAM, and good 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Yes, there are limitations to that too, such as you need to select the carrier accordingly, which brings us to talk about the next advantage.
Choose Your Carrier
Thank the Almighty, it is just the previous month that the iPhone users took some breaths of respite with the release of Verizon iPhone, that somewhat combated the network issues. Truly, AT&T becomes a pain for iPhone users, overshadowing all success of this smartphone with its staggering mess of dropped calls and limited data connections. Tell me, what would you do with your iPhone if you lived in an area with a disgusting AT&T coverage? Android, in terms of carriers, has devices that are available on every major cellular carriers such as Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint. While Verizon has the Motorola Droid, Droid Incredible and Eris, T-Mobile offers Nexus One, Behold II, MyTouch 3G, with MyTouch Slide to be offered pretty soon. Not to forget, Sprint offers the Hero, Moment, while Evo 4G is on the cards. The idea is, with Android, you have the freedom to choose your carrier, and need not stick with AT&T unlike the iPhone.
Open Operating System
Undoubtedly, the iOS is great! However, it's closed. Which means it is up to Apple to decide the features that are to be added to the iPhone. On the other hand, in an open operating system of Android, every company is free to offer their features for the kind of customers they deal with. They can also add to and enhance the OS, if they feel like. Agreed the iOS doesn't really give you a pain in the back, but when it comes to talking about advantages of Android over iPhone OS, Android takes away all Brownie points!
Android Market is Way Better
This is a surprise, isn't it? You thought, come on! How can Android Market supersede the rich collection of applications in the App store that are more than 400,000 in number? The Android market sure has just 50,000 apps to flaunt, but let me tell you one thing. Even though the Apple Store receives more than 10,000 apps every week for approval, most of them are not paid heed to, mostly because a similar app already exists. However, on the other hand, the Android Market is completely driven by the customers where they rank the app on the basis of its productivity and utility, which means that even if there exists a similar app already, one is free to select the app that they prefer, for the existent app need not always be the best. Simply put, no censorship exists in the Android market, and you're free to submit and select apps for the possibilities are interminable.
You know, you can never say that iPhone is weaker in comparison to Android. But then, the Apple developers must know that they have a fierce competition to face in the market, with Android having launched, an army of smartphones to stand pat against the iPhone's four installments. If you're still short of figuring out the many advantages of Android over iPhone, ask your Android fanboy friends having 'broken the iPhone contract' recently. They'll tell you why . For now, I'll wind up with my seasoning on this interesting comparison between Android and iPhone - a debate that's still on, a discourse, that will never end.
